THE REAL CPI

2 Nov 2023

The annual CPI figure was announced today; the annual increase is 5.4%. This was a little more than expected by the economists, but I am sure not by you, or any of us. The ABS measures the actual cost to the consumer, not the ticket price. Take childcare for example, the cost of childcare increased by 6.7% in the quarter but after changes in Government subsidies the figure in the CPI basket is 13.2%. This is the net cost to the family.

Similarly, with electricity the actual cost rise was 18.6% but after rebates the figure used to calculate inflation was 4.29%. Fuel rose 7.2% for the quarter and Insurance was up 8.6% for the year. If you thought your cost of living was more than the official CPI, you are dead right!

For Sydney the inflation figure was 5.6%. For your commercial lease with CPI increases, the index numbers are Sept 2022, 128.6 and for September 2023, 135.8.
